ANC-MP Sue van der Merwe 58 survives assault, strangulation
Rondebosch. April 5 2013 - Ruling ANC party MP Sue van der Merwe was attacked by 'robbers' in her Rondebosch home on Friday 21h00 April 5 2013.

"Two men assaulted her and strangled her until she lost conscienceness," said SAPS capt Frederick Van Wyk to The Times newspaper. (Her brother Gordon Young denied this, saying she 'remained conscious throughout the assault.)
Captain Van Wyk said "The suspects fled when her son arrived at her home.' The men took bank-cards and escaped in her silver Hyundai car. Ms van der Merwe worked from 1988 to 1991 at the Cape Town office of the human-rights group Black Sash. She became an MP in 1996. It's not known if any other valuables were stolen from her home.
