2013-03-08 ALBERTON. Beeld journalist Pauli van Wyk reports from the Palm Ridge regional court at the East Rand that old-age pensioner Michael Sinequan of Brackendowns is facing a murder-trial for the death of young Afrikaner dad Owein Lombard. The Alberton electrical contractor was shot dead in Michelle Avenue on 9 June 2012 by Sinequan who fired two bullets from his .357 Magnum revolver. The pensioner claimed in his bail application last year that the unarmed Lombard had 'assaulted' him and that he fired off the two shots in self-defence before fleeing in his car. Allegedly the two men had been in a near-miss traffic incident. Sinequan turned himself in two weeks later and yesterday his legal representative Shafique Sarlie said Mr Sinequan 'would admit guilt'. Sinequan said during last year's bail application that he had been 'in a seriously disturbed emotional situation." Yesterday he said in an interview outside the court that he handed himself in to the police 'because my conscience had plagued me.' In the 1980s Mr Sinbequan had been fined R300 in a criminal assault case but has no other incidents on his record. The murdered man's family and friends filled the public gallery during the hearing - all wearing red tshirts embroidered with Lombard's name, date of birth and date of death. His widow Tersia said she still wears his wedding band on a chain around her neck. "We would have been married seven years in January. He was an honest, hardworking man and I miss him every day." Mar 07, 2013 Muslim-South African man Thabit Samodien 23, found dead with lower-garments removed, stoned to death near Roodepoort (above). His young wife witnessed the event and was too traumatised to talk to the police about it.
2013-03-07 Serial-rapist 41-year-old Elias Mothate, who was earlier found guilty of the horrific rape and attack July 2010 on a white woman and her 7-year-old son in their home at Orchards, managed to get his sentencing postponed to April in the Pretoria North court: he decided at the last minute that he wanted an attorney instead of handling his own defence as he had been doing. The man has another five previous rape convictions against him, and also had to appear in another court later in the day for another rape-case, reports Beeld newspaper. Mothate's pitchfork-attack against the young mom was so ferocious that the 7-year-old son afterwards was found by police-investigators ' seated on his bed, frozen, too terrified to move, with his little dachshund dog clutched in his lap'. The child didn't want to move from his bed, he had said, "because he had seen the devil's red eyes at the door.' Three years later, the child still refuses to speak about it. The child had sat and watched in terror, clutching his little dog in his lap, while the attacker repeatedly stabbed his mother with a pitchfork and was brutally beating her. "When the accused man then forced the child's mother to go outside, where she was raped while the pitchfork was held to her throat, the child thought the man was going to bury his mother,' the report noted. The child even offered the rapist all his pocket money - R30 - when Mothate demanded that his rape-victim pay him. Afterwards the woman victim had to take anti-retroviral medication which 'made her ill' because Mothate is HIV-positive. She now suffers from sleeplessness -- and her viewpoints towards with 'people of a specific ethnic race' (Mothate is black) have suffered great damage because 'this brings back the trauma of the rape.' Above: Mar 04, 2013 There are conflicting reports about the motiveless knifing-attack against Mrs Susan Pohl on a Tzaneen smallholding on March 4 2013. Mrs Pohl, author of the conservative Afrikaans book "Geloftevolk Ontwaak' (Awaken, People of the Vow), was attacked by either one or three black men at 9am at her administrative job for the owner of a Tzaneen agricultural business. Mrs Pohl managed to pull a gun from her holster, strapped to her hip, and shot dead the knifeman while he was lunging for her, it is believed. There also are conflicting reports about whether or not she was arrested for 'murder': the SAPS said the inquest hearing into the farm-workers death first has to be held before the exact circumstances can be established. Only then will the Public Prosecution office decide whether she should be charged or not.

The man then fled taking only a cellphone. The SA police claim this was a 'thwarted' attack: four months earlier there had been another 'thwarted attack' against Mrs Twort.

The youth wing of civil rights group AfriForum at the university took exception to the post and laid a complaint with the institution's human rights commission.Campus spokeswoman Kiewiet Scheppel said: "We have received the complaint and are investigating." Mfusi said his lawyers had advised him not to comment but he would not delete his comments. The policeman, a neighbour of Frans Viviers, became very irate after the Vivier children had accidentially kicked a ball into the policeman's backyard on 13 March 2011. He refused to hand the ball back. The angered constable Ledwaba then went next door, attacked the children's grandfather in the backyard when he asked for the rugby ball back, and then shot him in the stomach. Mr Janse van Rensburg died of his injuries a month later - and his grieving widow Poppie died the following November 5 of a heart-attack. Constable Ledwaba was only found guilty of 'pointing a firearm and culpible homicide'. The man has now appealed against the guilty finding and the sentencing -- and was granted a mere R1000 bail. The High Court now will hear the case all over again.Meanwhile the constable has allegedly been barred from owning any firearm. It's not known if he got to keep his job however or whether he is still kept on at the SAPS payroll until the case is settled - which may take years.

Dereck Cornelius, 73, was dearly loved by his 12 and 15 year-old grandchildren, who relied on him to pick them up at school. “I knew something was wrong when the school phoned me to say my father had not fetched the children,” said his daughter Lindsay van Niewenhuizen.She picked up the children a short while later and when she arrived home, a gut feeling there was something wrong made her leave her children in the car. After the trauma of being hijacked in her own driveway in 2003, Van Niewenhuizen prepared herself for the worst.“I went in and saw that the house was in shambles, fear crept up on me and I started calling for my father,” she said. Entering his bedroom she found her father on the ground.“He was beaten beyond recognition. I went on my knees next to his body and what happened afterwards is a blur,” she said. Van Niewenhuizen’s children heard her screaming as they waited outside and she later heard from them that she pleaded for the mutilated body of her father to wake up. According to Van Niewenhuizen, the the only stolen items were an Xbox, two cell phones and some clothing. “It is clear he put up a fight. But why take an old man's life for such petty items? Some speculate that he was actually beaten with a spade,” she stated in disgust.The autopsy results will determine Cornelius’ cause of death. The Independent in the UK 's journalist Justin Cartwright writes:"The background to the Pistorius case is concerning, but it is no surprise: in South Africa only one in 50 hijackings lead to a conviction and most murders go unsolved - The trial of Oscar Pistorius is extraordinary in itself; there is something very dark at the heart of this case. But it is also extraordinary for what it is revealing, in unintended ways, about the heart of South Africa today.On Wednesday, it was announced that the detective who was supposed to be leading the inquiry is to appear in court in May for attempted murder. It is alleged that two years ago, Detective Hilton Botha, while drunk, fired from a police vehicle at a minibus taxi full of black passengers (...). The case against Detective Botha was dropped, but has now been reopened, presumably because of the potential PR disaster.Botha also suggested that a row between Pistorius and his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was overheard by witnesses. After questioning, he agreed that one of them was half a kilometre from Pistorius’s house. Botha has also admitted to not wearing protective clothing when entering the crime scene, and he announced, without forensic evidence, that Pistorius had testosterone in his house. 11 Feb 2013: Lindy van Wyk provided the first photo (below) , writing on Facebook that her 81-year-old grandmother Isabella Magereta Duvenage was in her view 'found badly assaulted' at the Advent haven frail care home, in Heidelberg, Gauteng. From the photographs published on the social media in SA of her injuries it appears as if Mrs Duvenage was "badly battered in the face and that her nose may also have been broken". HOWEVER family members are baffled about the differomg explanations for the elderly Afrikaans lady's condition. Doctors said the old lady had a broken nose, a concussion and suffered blood loss. Her eyes were swollen shut and she "appeared battered'. However Advent Haven administrator Danie Gebhardt denied this, saying that when Mrs Duvenage was found on 12 Feb at 7h00 on the floor, lying on her stomach, she was rushed to hospital in a 'confused state'. He denied in an interview with Heraut newspaper that she had been battered and said the staff looked in on each patient every two hours.

Feb 17 2013 - White South African resident Clifford Victor Cope, a tradesman, was arrested at the Beit Bridge border post by SA officials - and forced to spend six days with 26 other 'prisoners' all packed together like sardines in a shipping container at the Musina SAPS station. Cope was not allowed to phone anyone and his employer was only able to trace him to the Musina SAPS after four days of searching for him. Beeld journalist Jeanne-Marié Versluis reported from the (Pretoria High Court) court that judge Hennie de Vos ordered the police-minister to pay R220,000 compensation to Mr Cope because he was "illegally arrested at the Beit bridge border and illegally imprisoned in the freight-container". Cope was arrested in June 2010, said his attorney Andrea Botha of the De Klerk & Marais Incorporated law firm in Pretoria. "After his arrest he was held captive for six days in a freight container which was used as a temporary holding-cell - together with 26 other detainees at Musina Police Station. The container, said Cope, was icecold at night and had poor ventilation. His attorney said "he initially did not get any bedding and was forced to sleep like a sardine in a can amongst his fellow-prisoners on the wooden floor. He was not allowed to contact anyone to give him legal assistance and his employer only managed to trace him to Musina police station after searching for him for four days.' Cope repeatedly asked to be taken to court as the SA law requires to be done within 48 hours of any arrest. He was only released after six days because an attorney appointed by his employer demanded his release. (There's no mention in this report of any formal charges having been placed by the police against Mr Cope. )The container was described as 'filthy, with an unusable toilet and the water offered to the prisoners to drink, was 'too filthy to drink'. After his rescue he was diagnosed with gastritis and required intravenous treatment against dehydration,' said Botha. Besides ordering to pay compensation of R220,000, the court ordered that the Police Minister must also pay all legal costs incurred by Mr Cope in addition to the 15,5 percent annual interest which accrued for the compensation amount effective from 23 September 2010. The Zambian resident writes that three vehicles were involved: a bus owned by the post-office, the farmer's Toyota landcruiser and a large truck carrying maize. When the police returned to the farm with him it was found that someone had tried to break open the safe. His parents were attacked about three months earlier inside their homestead by two black males with knives and robbed - but not injured. The couple now are in hospital due to illness and were not at home Tuesday. Hannes the younger believes the two attackers very likely are linked as their modus operandus seem very similar. His parents also were ambushed - as he was -- after they had dropped off their maid at her house, at around the same time of day he was also attacked. SAPS sergeant Majang Skalkie said no-one was arrested for the attempted murder of the farmer.

My child was hysterical. The officials were inhuman. They even refused to give her water. When we got there and Cherise was crying, one threatened to throw her in a police cell if I couldn’t get her to calm down.”His wife, Stephanie, 30, pregnant with the couple’s second child, said she expected the worst when the two didn’t come back from the café. We have taken Cherise to a counsellor and she is getting better. But she is scared of police officers. Whenever she sees a police car, she looks for her dad and starts crying hysterically.” Niemann has laid a charge against the police with the independent complaints directorate. Feb 01, 2013 Seven cars torched: Bessie's farm, Tarentaalrand in the early hours of Friday. TZANEEN -The SAPS in Tzaneen Lt Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed that in an attack against a white-owned farm, Mercedes Benz sprinter mini bus and BMW were "burnt beyond recognition" while a Golf 4, two Nissan Sentra Sedans and two tipper trucks were partly burnt in a blaze started by an unknown suspects. Noepe said the 34 year-old farm owner, who is a motor mechanic, heard a noise outside around 01:00 and went outside to investigate. 'He found his cars on fire and saw a car driving away from his farm,' said Ngoepe. Ngoepe said the damage to the cars is estimated to be about R795 000. He said the motive for the incident is unknown - nothing was robbed -- and police have opened six counts of malicious damage to property for investigation.
